Predicative adjectives

Predicative adjectives (which stand independently in a sentence) always have the same form, without endings.

Der Mann ist schön.
= The man is handsome.
Die Frau ist schön.
= The woman is beautiful.
Das Kind ist schön.
= The child is beautiful.
Die Leute sind schön.
= The people are beautiful.
Ich bin süß.
= The apricot is sweet.
Ich bin fett.
= The butter is fat.
Ich werde sauer.
= The milk becomes sour.

Comparison of adjectives and adverbs

Adjectives and adverbs have special forms for comparisons.

There are three levels of use: the positive, comparative and superlative forms.

In the comparative, adjectives take the ending '-er'; in the superlative, 'am' comes before the adjective, which takes the ending '-sten'.

Short adjectives which have an '-a-', '-o-', or '-u-' take an umlaut in the comparative and the superlative.

Constructions for comparisons

so + Positiv + wie

Er ist fast so alt wie sie.
= He is nearly as old as she.
Er ist genauso frech wie Jonas.
= He is just as cheeky as Jonas.

Komparativ + als

Er ist älter als seine Schwester.
= He is older than his sister.
Du kannst das nicht länger als zehn Jahre machen.
= You cannot do that for longer than ten years.

Declension of adjectives

Adjectives used attributively (between the article and the noun) must have an ending. This ending depends on the preceding determiner (article, pronoun, etc.).

If there is no article before the noun, the adjective has the case ending.

Junge Leute tragen Jeans.
= Young people wear jeans.
Ich muss mir neue Hausschuhe kaufen.
= I must buy new slippers.
Der hat ja fettige Haare!
= Oh, he has long hair!
Er hat auf jeden Fall breite Schultern und schmale Hüften.
= He definitely has broad shoulders and narrow hips.

If the article before the noun has no case ending, the adjective has the case ending.

Das ist ein schöner Pullover.
= That is a beautiful pullover.
Nehmen Sie ein persönliches Geschenk mit.
= Take a personal gift with you.
Davon benötigst du nur ein gültiges Reisedokument.
= For that you only need a valid travel document.

If the article before the noun has a case ending, the adjective has the ending '-en' or '-e' from Table 2.

Sie trägt einen neuen Pullover.
= She is wearing a new pullover.
Ziehen Sie eine elegante Hose an.
= Put elegant trousers on.

Adjective-derived nouns with indefinite pronouns

Many adjectives can be converted into nouns. They appear as nouns after an indefinite pronoun such as something, much, little, all, nothing and must be capitalised. They are declined according to rules for adjective declination.

Ich möchte etwas Kaltes trinken.
= I would like to drink something cold.
In den Nachrichten gibt es wenig Neues.
= There is not much new in the news.
Im Urlaub haben wir viel Schönes erlebt.
= On holiday we experienced a lot of beautiful things.
Heute ist nichts Neues passiert.
= Today nothing new has happened.
Ich wünsche dir alles Gute zum Geburtstag.
= I wish you all the best on your birthday.
