In english

96 % of Germans watch television.
The word of in this sense means the case will be genitiv. The word Deutschen/Germans is plural.
Genitiv singular: des, der, des
Genitiv plural: der
Therefore 96% der Deutschen sehen täglich fern.

Hallo markok1988

The right word is DER Deutschen, because it's plural.

Here on short:

For the begining you have to understand the questions.
1. Nominativ (wer oder was (Who or what)?)
2. Genitiv (Wessen (whose book is this?) and also who or what if there is sentence like this example: there is a lot of people)
3. Dativ (Wem (to who - for example: with who am I going somewhere?))
4. Akkusativ (Wen oder Was (for example: who or what is missing?))

And now the rest: we know in german three forms
1- femininum ("woman"/weiblich)
for example: Die Katze (a kat), Die Frau (a women) etc. Word: DIE
2- masculinum ("man"/männlich)
for example: Der Mann (a man), Der Stuhl (a chair) etc. Word: DER
3- neutrum ("no woman/no man" )
for example: das Mädchen (a girl), das Fenster (a window) etc. Word: DAS

There is no easy way - you have to learn which word (der, das or die) is the right one.

And in the end: how to use that all: You have to remember the endings:i
DER (singular)
Nominativ: der
Genitiv: des
Dativ: dem
Akkusativ: den

DIE (singular)
Nominativ: die
Genitiv: der
Dativ: der
Akkusativ: die

DAS (singular)
Nominativ: das
Genitiv: des
Dativ: dem
Akkusativ: das

DIE (plural)
Nominativ: die
Genitiv: der
Dativ: den
Akkusativ: die

So in your case - you have a lot of Germans (Deutschen), that's plural (a lot, many) - you have to ask yourself: a lot of who? - that is genitiv - so you have genitiv and plural, there is no other option like DER
We also known starke (strong), schwache ("weak") and gemischte (mixed) Deklinationen (declensions) - but about that another time - it's enough for now.

Hope this helps ridulo.gif
