Nouns are declined by changing the article and sometimes by adding an ending to the noun.

Case:

  • Genitiv (wessen?) Genitive (whose?)
  • Dativ (wem?) Dative (to whom?)
  • Akkusativ (wen? was?) Accusative (who(m)? what?)

In the genitive singular most masculine and neuter nouns end in '-s' or '-es'. The ending '-es' is used with nouns of one syllable and those ending in '-s', '-ss', '-ß', '-sch', '-z', 'tz', '-x'.

The genitive

The genitive and rewriting with “von”

The genitive is the second of four cases in German. The genitive shows to whom something belongs and, as such, is the answer to the question “wessen” (whose).

Wessen Auto ist das? (= Whose car is that?)
Das ist das Auto des Vaters.
That is the father's car.
Wessen Tasche ist das?
Whose bag is that?
Das ist die Tasche der Mutter.
That is the mother's bag.
Wessen Ball ist das?
Whose ball is that?
Das ist der Ball des Mädchens.
That is the girl's ball.
Wessen Bücher sind das?
Whose books are those?
Das sind die Bücher der Kinder.
Those are the children's books.
Nominative Genitive
der Vater (= the father) des Vaters (= the father's)
die Mutter (= the mother) der Mutter (= the mother's)
das Mädchen (= the girl) des Mädchens (= the girl's)
die Kinder (= the children) der Kinder (= the children's)

Nouns with the articles “der” and “das” have the genitive ending -s or -es. -es comes after words with one syllable (der Mann → des Mannes, das Haus → des Hauses), as well as after words ending in -d, -t, -s, -sch, -tz.

The genitive of people and proper nouns

Proper nouns without an article generally take the ending -s in the genitive.

Marias Vater ist Arzt.
= Maria's father is a doctor.
Italiens Dörfer sind schön.
= The villages of Italy are beautiful.

In daily usage, the genitive in usually replaced by “von”. “Von” is a preposition that requires the dative.

Wessen Auto ist das? (= Whose car is that?) Das ist das Auto des Vaters. (= That is the father's car.) / Das ist das Auto von dem Vater. (= That is the car of the father.)
Wessen Tasche ist das? (= Whose bag is that?) Das ist die Tasche der Mutter. (= That is the mother's bag.) / Das ist die Tasche von der Mutter. (= That is the bag of the mother.)
Wessen Ball ist das? (= Whose ball is that?) Das ist der Ball des Mädchens. (= That is the girl's ball.) / Das ist der Ball von dem Kind. (= That is the ball of the child.)
Wessen Bücher sind das? (= Whose books are those?) Das sind die Bücher der Kinder. (= Those are the children's books.) / Das sind die Bücher von den Kindern. (= Those are the books of the children.)
